Hi there. Just had a question about some charms I got at an auction. They are marked KFS on the back and have the names Jiggs Maggie Mama Henrietta, Dale Inspector and Hans printed on them. Almost looks like they are cracker jack toys...can anyone help me find out what they're about! Thank you!

The KFS is almost certainly for King Features Syndicate, and the charms depict some of their comic strip characters. Maggie and Jiggs were the stars of Bringing Up Father; Hans was one of the Katzenjammer Kids. I'm not sure about the others.

My posting here is kind of redundant, Lorineal. Rob has already supplied as much info as I can deduce from this -- that is, that they have something to do with King Features. LIke Rob, I first recognized the initials instantly, then noticed that some of their long-running characters are included. Dale Inspector is a real mystery, and Mama Henrietta a somewhat less mysterious one. Could Henrietta be the first name of Mama Katzenjammer, the most long-suffering woman in comics?
Can't give any real help, tho. Sorry.

Lorineal777: Everyone here seems to speculate that you're speaking of *five* toys, named "Jiggs," "Maggie," "Mama Henrietta," "Dale Inspector" and "Hans."
I'm going to make a leap of faith and guess that "Mama" and "Henrietta" are actually two *separate* charms.
Am I right? In that case,
• Jiggs and Maggie are from Bringing Up Father, as has already been noted;
• Mama would be Mama Katzenjammer—and for the record, Don, her first name was originally Lena (a name later reused in the strip for a different character).
• If "Dale Inspector" is a man with a long beard, he should really be *Der* Inspector, and he's also from the Katzenjammer Kids.
• And finally, if "Henrietta" is a scrawny little girl with puffy cheeks, she's the girl lead from Carl Anderson's "Henry." (If she's not a scrawny little girl, I think I'm going to need more help.)

Good call, Ramapith! I sort of halfway thought "Dale" might refer to Flash Gordon's girlfriend, also a King Features character, but -- nah. "Inspector" certainly isn't likely to be anyone else but the Katzenjammers' truant officer. And the observation that there might be a comma between "Mama" and "Henrietta" certainly does make sense.
Only thing is, Henrietta is a '30s KFS character, whereas the Katzies and the Jiggs characters are both earlier. (Which is also a good reason to reject Dale Arden as a possibility.)
Thanks for posting. I was also interested to learn that Mama Katzenjammer actually did have a first name.
