Denny Colt will be on the big screen sometime soon, a Christmas present to all Will Eisner fans. (see the poster at www.imdb.com/media/rm761829120/tt0831887) And, according to the IMDB, the proper title in the US will be Will Eisner's the Spirit.
But, the 1987 movie Don mentioned in the 7/31/08 "Today in Toons," was not a "theatrical" release-at least not in the US. According to the IMDB it was a "made for TV" movie, and, possibly a (failed) pilot for a Spirit TV series.
BTW Don, I've noticed that Warner, through DC, has published Will Eisner Spirit material, and, some new material based on Eisner's work by one of their writers and artists. But the movie is through Lionsgate. Can I presume that Eisner's estate controls the rights to the Spirit, and, other such material, and, so has licensed Warner and Lionsgate?

I've heard about the Xmas release, but haven't updated the article yet. I'll try to get to it later today.
I don't know about DC's license of The Spirit, but Eisner was pretty good with business, so it's a good guess he retained movie rights. (The DC deal was negotiated during his lifetime, wasn't it?)

Ooh! I'll have to keep track of this myself. Regardless how they state it, it's something new to me. Can't hurt to increase the library of things I've read and watched.

Yeah, this one's worth keeping an eye out for. I usually wait until they turn up on TV (last toon-based movie I saw was Speed Racer, and that was because my grandson is really into anything with wheels).

I have the impression that the Warner/DC deal is more recent. though without checking on it through some source (besides a price guide, I'm not sure what that would be,) I really couldn't say.
I'm kinda looking forward to see what they will do with the Spirit on the "big screen." I can't say that I'm a big Spirit fan, I haven't even looked at a Spirit reprint book since the Warren days. But when I did, I appreciated Eisner's writing and art.

From what I'm hearing, the upcoming Spirit film is more a Frank Miller movie than a Will Eisner movie. Picture Denny Colt living in Sin City; that's what I expect to see.

Hmm. I guess the property being adapted isn't enough. While I can see that it drips talent, Frank Miller's work doesn't do much for me personally. I was unable to read 300, and haven't attempted to see the movie. Central City being depicted as Sin City is not an attractive prospect for me. I'll take a closer look when it gets out. Maybe this'll be another one I'll wait for until I can enjoy it in my living room.

Sorry for this late update, but I've offline for awhile, just got back on.
Anyway, here's another reason to be potentially disappointed in the Lionsgate release of Will Eisner's the Spirit. (produced and/or directed by Frank Miller.)
In looking for more about this upcoming movie, while online at my library, I checked a site that usually has some reliable information about "comic book movies," comics2film.com. That site linked me to another site, where a plot synopsis had me paused.
I had thought, and, in reading Don's article on the Spirit, had confirmed, that the Spirit was not actually dead. Denny Colt just used the appearance of his death to supposedly fight crime more effectively.
Yet the synopsis I found made it appear that 1) Denny Colt was a uniformed rookie cop. 2) that he actually DID die, and, came back to life with supernatural powers.
If the Spirit in this movie is like what the synopsis says, then quite obviously, it is not, despite the title, Will Eisner's the Spirit.

Yow! That's a biggie!
From his work, I see Frank Miller is an admirer of Eisner. How could he do such a thing? What's he doing, The Spirit or [url=sgtspook.htm]Sgt. Spook?/url] I'll still plan on seeing it, but may wait until it's on network TV, like I do most superhero movies.
Welcome back, by the way. I was starting to notice you hadn't been around. I was just reminded of how it is to be forced offline -- my hard drive just died. A friend (who happens to be a genius at this) rescued my data, but recommended the old drive be taken out back and shot.
